1.2- UNION, INTERSECTION, COMPLEMENTS, SET DIFFERENCE

Click to learn about each section

Venn diagrams are used in set theory, this is the one that will be used.

UNION

∪ means Union

Definition: a union is everything in either set or both sets combined.

An example we could use is the Demons from Episode one and the demons from Episode 2

O= {Imp, lost soldier, Cacodemon, pinky, baron of hell}

O is One for Episode One

T={ Cacodemon, Cyberdemon, Imp, pinky, lost soldier}

T is Two for Episode Two

The Union would be:

(O ∪ T)={Imp, lost soldier, Cacodemon, pinky, cyberdemon, baron of hell}

INTERSECTION

∩ means intersection

Definition: The intersection of two sets is the set of elements they share

If we look back at T and O we can see all the demons listed. an Intersection would be:

O∩T ={Imp, lost soldier, Cacodemon, pinky}

COMPLEMENTS

Definition:the complement of a set is everything in the universal set that is not in that set.

' is used to show complement

An example of Complement is O'

O'={cyberdemon}

O' means everything thats not O so we only put whats in T and in the outside of the circles (in this case we have nothing in the outside). The intersection is not included because it is apart of O aswell.

SET DIFFERENCE

Definition: The set difference means you take one group and remove anything that’s also in another group.

An example would be O-T so it would only show whats in O.

O-T={Baron of Hell}
